Sandra Glahn’s Interview w/ Eugene Peterson: On the Role of Women

A note from Wendy Wilson, MissioNexus, Mission Advisor for Development of Women:

Some years ago, Dr Glahn interviewed the respected theologian and author Eugene Peterson on “the women question.” Though he passed away in 2018, his life works like “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction” and “The Message” live on. In my own process there are both sisters and brothers that have challenged me, encouraged me, and called me to a deeper consideration of my own beliefs and practice. Because of them I have moved forward with more hope and courage in my own calling as a disciple of Christ . . . and God just keeps getting more awe-inspiring and good and unique! “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds . . .” Heb 10:24

As we continue our Pursuing Partnership series, this interview highlights the honest differences and increasing explorations around the North American Evangelical positions and practices on women (and so men too) as the people of God. From interpretive challenges in contested passages, to a Genesis 1-2 vision for male/female partnership in God’s design, to historical context that informs the message of Scripture, I believe we are on a course of discovery and transformation that will bring about a time of revival of the gospel message in the world – all hands on deck for the accomplishment of the Great Commission!

The link to the blog article is below . . .but here is an excerpt from “An Interview with Eugene Peterson: On the Role of Women”:

“I have colleagues who are world-class exegetes. Some affirm equality of women in ministry and others don’t. They’re all master exegetes; they’re all working with the same text. So I have a lot of respect for these people in their attempt, their determination, to honor the Word. I can certainly respect them. For some, at least the ones I know, it comes out of no sense of male chauvinism or superiority or ego, but an honest attempt to honor the Word of God. . . Yet my personal experience is so different, and the shaping of my life has been so different. I could read these verses I think just as accurately exegetically. So I guess it’s one of the things we’re involved with in [this] century that’s different.”
