Summary

This book, written by a professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and Business School, is a study of how one’s peak skills in some areas, requiring what he defines as fluid intelligence, decline much earlier in life than we typically expect. Brooks then spends considerable time describing and illustrating crystallized intelligence, the ability to synthesize and communicate complex ideas, a skill that increases as we age. The arch of the book is to explain the declining curve of the first earlier in life, and the growth curve of the second in later years. Brooks argues that understanding this issue and applying it in one’s life can lead to an increasingly satisfying later life. He urges his reader to accept the inevitable and provides insight into how to transition in these respective, inevitable phases of the life cycle.
