This edited book contends for this main argument: “the influence of a Buddhist worldview really does affect how the message of Jesus is understood and responded to, and how the church lives out its faith in the Buddhist world” (p. 234). This argument challenges a prevailing view in the Buddhist mission field that approaches to evangelism, discipleship, and church life do not need to be affected by Buddhism. To prove this argument, the book presents studies on five Buddhist nations (Cambodia, Thailand, Japan. Vietnam, and Nepal) that examine their own experience of Theravada, Mahayana, or Vajrayana Buddhist traditions. Each chapter covers one nation’s overview of Buddhism in daily life, the barriers to gospel communication, and practical insights to address these barriers. The book concludes with implications for cross-cultural workers and suggestions to apply the insights from the book.
