US Income Tax for Missionaries: Wow, Things Changed! What Should We Do?

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) made major changes in taxes for missionaries and pastors. What are they and how can Mission Organizations help their staff address them? We’ll also discuss other tax rulings and pronouncements that affect missionary taxes.

Learning objectives:

  • Assess the changes in U.S. tax law brought about by the TCJA and their impact on missionaries both in the U.S. and overseas.
  • List the key elements and provisions of tax law that affect missionaries including the foreign earned income exclusion, minister tax rules, and expense reimbursement.
  • Identify ways to lessen the impact of the TCJA on missionary staff.
