Summary

This book presents eight myths about missions and explains the folly of these myths. These eight myths are: (1) missions is peripheral; (2) Western missionaries are obsolete; (3) everything we do is missions; (4) missions competes against everything else; (5) missions is now short term; (6) missionaries are holy, rare, and strange; (7) missions is harmful; and (8) missions is failing. The author argues that each of these myths is “unbalanced, simplistic, or built on faulty assumptions” (p. 189). In addition, the author proposes that the Western missionaries can serve the global church as encouragers, catalysts, connectors, resourcers, and pioneers. Finally, the author cites four values that bolster missionary commitment and impact: biblical (not expedient), collaborative (not mercenary), strategic (not cheap), and creative (not passive).
