Summary
Gavin Ortlund is a pastor, author, speaker, and apologist for Christian faith. He holds a Ph.D. in Historical Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary. The author of nine books as well as numerous academic and popular articles, his 2021 Why God Makes Sense in a World that Doesn’t won numerous awards and his 2024 What It Means to Be Protestant won the Christianity Today 2024 Book of the Year award. He regularly speaks at churches and conferences around the country.
In this volume, he argues that in theology, as in battle, some hills are worth dying on. But how do we know which ones? When should doctrine divide, and when should unity prevail? He then quite effectively makes the case that while all doctrines matter, some are more essential than others. He considers how and what to prioritize in doctrine and ministry, encouraging humility and grace along the way. Using four basic categories of doctrine in order of importance, this book helps new and seasoned church leaders labor both to uphold doctrine and to preserve unity.
