A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload

By Cal Newport

Portfolio, 2021, 320 Pages

Summary

Newport observes that nobody decided that email was the best way for knowledge workers to construct their workflow, it just happened. Instead of allowing email, instant messaging, and communication services like Slack drive us, he suggests we thoughtfully consider better ways to structure our work. The frenetic pace of email-based productivity, well suited to only a portion of how we should work, should be replaced by workflows which avoid attention disruption. This book provides specific examples of how organizations have boosted productivity while removing high expectation, asynchronous communication.
