Nuts & Bolts: Starting a Fundraising Office (DEV)

Many small faith-based nonprofits are confronted with growing their fundraising function and know they need to get serious about growing up and starting a fundraising department or office. Consider this workshop if you don’t know where to start and simply want to confirm that your organization is on the right track.
Learning objectives:
- Identify organizational structures for the fundraising department
- List staff considerations for a small fundraising office
- Explain the importance of gift acceptance policies and fundraising integrity
- Implement tips for effective use of CRMs or DMSs
- Strategize how to grow beyond the founding donors
- Assess internal cultural challenges for fundraising staff

Barbara Bowman oversees: Advancement Services, Development, Marketing and Communication, Ministry Partnership, and the Advocate Wing. For 30+ years, Barbara has been involved in Young Life, an international youth ministry. She has 20+ years of experience in nonprofit and corporate career management, ten with the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce. Barbara has served on many nonprofit boards and community coalitions in the areas of economic development and human services. Barbara oversees Advancement Services, Development, Marketing and Communication, Ministry Partnership, and the Advocate Wing. She has been involved in Young Life has 20+ years of experience in nonprofit and corporate career management, Barbara has served on many nonprofit boards and community coalitions in the areas of economic development and human services.

Kristen Shuler
Vice President of Development
East-West Ministries International
In her eighth year of service with East-West, Kristen provides oversight and strategic direction to East-West’s development, marketing and communications initiatives, including campaign strategy, institutional giving, planned giving, events, direct mail, and all marketing/communications collateral. Prior to joining East-West, Kristen served on the mission field across South America with the International Mission Board and other local organizations by engaging evangelism and church planting strategies. She received her undergraduate degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and currently resides in Dallas, Texas.
