Summary

This is a book which describes the transformation that the US military undertook in the initial years of the War on Terror. The US military had grown out of an era where efficiencies created a massive organization capable of bringing great force to bear in fairly predictable war scenarios. With the advent of new technologies and new forms of warfare, this huge bureaucracy had to change to be more flexible, proactive and decentralized.  The book is full of ideas about how cross-team collaboration can work to bring about organizational outcomes. McChrystal and his fellow authors describe in detail the hindrances that specialization introduced to intelligence gathering and how the military sought to overcome these problems.
