| This is as corrected edition— ironically, I missed including the prayer for the 22nd, which was to be for Iran. I’ve included it with a light amendment from the way I originally drafted it, to take into account the US action. 22nd. We pray for the people of Iran, and especially for the believers there, in the midst of (or, perhaps, by the time this day arrives, in the aftermath of) the war with Israel. The war itself has been fast-moving, rapidly-evolving, and seems to be heavily in the favor of Israel (and now the United States)–but not necessarily fast-ending. It could end in days or continue for weeks. In the meantime, fear stalks Tehran, thousands have fled, and many civilians have been injured or killed. Should the current government of Tehran fall, it doesn’t automatically mean that Iran would become free, especially for believers–Sudan, Libya, and Syria are examples of the uncertainty and even outright chaos that can follow. A new government might just as easily be headed by the Revolutionary Guards, and be perhaps far worse for believers. Pray for believers to be blessings to those around them, especially for those who have fled Tehran or who have experienced loss. Pray for a resolution to the war and an end to the violence. Pray for the Kingdom to continue to spread even in the midst of this uncertainty. Isaiah 43:2 — “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…” 23rd. We pray for believers in Eritrea: a poor, one-party state with some 5 million people in the grip of a repressive government. In 2002 the government banned all religious groups from meeting and practicing their faith without official religion, and only granted recognition to Sunni Muslims, Eritrean Orthodox, Roman Catholics, and Evangelical Lutheran groups. Ever since then, Christians have suffered repression along with everyone else: leaders arrested, imprisoned, and tortured. Nevertheless underground churches have blossomed and public churches have seen spiritual renewal. Pray for the many Christians in Eritrea’s horrific prisons. A recent article highlights the ongoing situation there (AFP). Hebrews 13:3 — “Remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” 24th. We praise God for the small snippet of good news out of South Sudan: Germany’s embassy has resumed operations. The security situation remains tense, but so far it has not descended into total warfare. We continue to pray for a resolution of the crisis and a just government. We also pray for the many believers and churches to boldly take opportunities to be a blessing to their neighbors and a voice for justice and reconciliation. Isaiah 58:12 — “You will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.” 25th. We pray for the believers in Central Asia who are increasingly facing persecution. This year, Kyrgyzstan has returned to the Worldwatch List for the first time in over a decade (Persecution.org). Most of the persecution is focused on Protestants. Nevertheless, believers are boldly meeting together to pray and work for the spread of the Gospel in the region (for example, see this article). Pray for their protection, and for Kingdom advance in the nations of Central Asia. 2 Thessalonians 3:1–2 — “Pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored … and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people.” 26th. Praise God for new signs of openness to the Gospel and following Jesus in the West, including in America, Europe, and Australia. Many of the younger generation are coming to faith and praying for revival in the West. Let us join them in prayerful hope for these nations, which have been secularizing for decades. Isaiah 44:3 — “I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground…” 27th. We continue to pray for the people of Sudan in the midst of the ongoing war. Attacks in Darfur have accelerated the surge of refugees into Eastern Chad, where the total number of refugees has risen to 1.2 million–three times the number in April 2023. This article has on-the-ground reporting from Khartoum: “free of the RSF, but survival is still a struggle.” We pray for an end to the war, but also for the effectiveness of the many Kingdom ministries operating in the area, ministering to the refugees. Psalm 10:17–18 — “You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them … defending the fatherless and the oppressed.” 28th. Pray for the church in India: diverse, with a long legacy. Much of Indian Christianity has been the results of movements to Christ among people groups over the last 300 years. In some parts of India there is remarkable growth–especially amongst some of the darkest places. In others, there has been a decline in numbers. Persecution in India has been intensifying, along with the rise of militant, nationalistic Hinduism. Pray for believers in India to endure and spread in the midst of this increasing pressure. 1 Peter 4:14 — “If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” |
