How the Most Effective Leaders Evaluate Talent

Lou Holtz once said, I noticed I was a much better football coach the years I had really good players. A part of effective leadership is attracting and developing a high-capacity team. One of the most demotivating experiences for A-players is un-remediated C-players. To sustain a healthy and productive organizational culture leaders have to recruit and develop the people around them. Leaders understand everyone is more important than the tasks they perform, but no one is more important than the mission.Balancing this tension can be challenging but it requires the right combination of evaluation and feedback to inform training and development. Leaders who are not effective at evaluating the talent they already have are less likely to accurately assess the capacity of incoming staff.
