Awakening Disciples:A Journey Beyond Global Evangelism
The heartbeat of the Great Commission—“Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19)—is not just about proclaiming the gospel, but about walking with people as they grow in Christ. Global evangelism is the spark, but discipleship is the fire that sustains transformation.
In Acts 8, Philip shares the gospel with the Ethiopian eunuch, who responds with faith and baptism. But Philip doesn’t stop there—he explains the Scriptures, guiding the eunuch into deeper understanding. Evangelism is opening the door; discipleship is walking through it.
John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress captures this beautifully. Christian begins his journey after hearing the gospel, but it’s the guidance of characters like Evangelist and Faithful that help him persevere. Discipleship is portrayed as a long, often difficult road—full of distractions like Vanity Fair and burdens like the Slough of Despond. Yet, through fellowship and truth, Christian grows stronger, more resolute, and ultimately reaches the Celestial City.
Today, global evangelism continues to open hearts—but without discipleship, many falter. In a village in Southeast Asia, a new believer hears the gospel through a radio broadcast. A local pastor then begins weekly visits, teaching Scripture and modeling Christlike living. In urban America, a young woman accepts Christ at a concert. She’s invited into a small group where she learns to pray, study the Bible, and share her faith.
Technology has expanded this reach—apps, online courses, and virtual mentoring connect believers across continents. But the essence remains: discipleship is relational, intentional, and rooted in truth.
At Missio Nexus, we’ve focused this year -2025, on global evangelism.
- We’ve been urged to raise up bold, gospel-centered “troublemakers” to reach the global youth culture.
- We’ve been challenged to use Spirit-led strategies and to renew a commitment to prayer.
- We’ve faced the need to ask ourselves, “What are we doing if we’re not boldly proclaiming the gospel?”.
As followers of Christ, we are all beyond grateful -of course, to those that were obedient to the call for global evangelism in years past and because of that obedience, we are here now. But…it is not wise to stay at only global evangelism. Transformation must continue.
Jesus didn’t just call us to make converts—He called us to make disciples. That means walking with people through their doubts, their growth, and their calling. From the dusty roads of Jerusalem to the digital highways of today, the journey continues. That is why our focus in 2026 is discipleship. Evangelism starts the story; discipleship writes the chapters.
In Christ,
