Summary
This book is not about “karma” as used in the traditional Buddhist sense, but in the popular, worldly spirituality that tries to attach spiritual meaning or spiritual causes to good and bad experiences, blessings and hardships. Thus, the book defines Karmic Christianity as “essentially the performance-based contract of Sinai, not the grace-based liberty of Zion” (p. x). The author expresses his aims this way: (1) “I wrote the book for global Christians who deeply desire to know God and make him known but fear they are never good enough” (p. xii); and (2) “My aim is to help the reader realize the pervasive karmic trappings in much of our Christian spirituality” (p. xix). The author accomplishes these aims in the book by exploring how Karmic Christianity may be at work in one’s misunderstanding of God’s purposes, Christian assurance, living, growth, and service. He offers the corrective that all the promises of God are ours in Christ Jesus.
