According to how they use their resources to shine the light of Jesus, there are three types of churches and Christians: selfish, benevolent, and strategic. Strategic Christians know who they are in Christ. They claim Jesus’s statement “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). They humbly acknowledge their role in God’s mission of light. Strategic Christians search for ways to share and demonstrate light every day, and they affirm the priesthood of believers and reject any notion that clergy or other professional ministers are the true or even most important workers in God’s mission. They see shining as an exciting challenge and adventure. The strategic have counted the cost and know that their lives might be quite different from the lives of selfish and benevolent people around them.
Strategic Christians think carefully about their stewardship of the resources and blessings entrusted to them by God: time, competencies, possessions, networks, and the ability to pray. This lifestyle involves more than generosity. The strategic seek the highest ROI (return on investment) on the use of their blessings and resources.
Strategic living flows from an intentionality to be the best possible steward of God’s blessings in order that the maximum number of people join God’s family, are transformed by grace, and God is honored.
