Critical theory and its expression in fields such as critical race theory, critical pedagogy, and queer theory are having a profound impact on our culture. Contemporary critical theory’s ideas about race, class, gender, identity, and justice have dramatically shaped how people think, act, and view one another – in Christian and secular spheres alike. Missions leaders need to understand the definition of these philosophies, how they impact theology, and what sort of missiological concerns they raise.
In this CEO Thought Leader Briefing, Drs. Shenvi and Sawyer will overview their recent book, Critical Dilemma, and discuss its implications for ministry leaders, the global missions movement, and how theology plays into this important cultural topic. This will be a presentation followed by Q&A led by Missio Nexus president Ted Esler.
Neil Shenvi has an A.B. in chemistry from Princeton and a PhD in theoretical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He worked as a research scientist at Yale University and Duke University and has published over thirty peer-reviewed scientific papers. In addition, his writings on critical theory have been published by the Journal of Christian Legal Thought, the Gospel Coalition, Eikon, Ratio Christi, and the Liberty University Law Review, among others. He is married and currently homeschools his four children.
Pat Sawyer has a BA in psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill, an MA in communication studies from UNC-Greensboro, and a PhD in educational studies and cultural studies from UNC-Greensboro. He is a faculty member at UNC-Greensboro and is published in the academy and in various popular outlets including The Federalist, The Gospel Coalition, and The American Conservative, among others. He is married and has three children.
