Summary

Patrick Lencioni is founder and president of The Table Group, a firm dedicated to helping leaders improve their organization’s health. His insights have been embraced by major corporations, entrepreneurs, sports teams, the military, and churches. Lencioni has also authored twelve best-selling books with over seven million copies sold worldwide. His thoughts have been covered by the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Fortune, Bloomberg Businessweek, and USA Today.

In The Six Types of Working Genius, during the first 78% of the book, he stimulates his readers’ attention through a hypothetical discussion among an advertising firm’s leadership team about a struggle the CEO is having. Through a multi-hour conversation, the team is able to identify the source of the problem – the bulk of the CEO’s time is being occupied by tasks for which he is ill-suited and weakly motivated. The group is then able to identify six types of working capabilities, which the book calls “geniuses,” which are needed for a team to function most effectively. Furthermore, if individuals don’t identify and function primarily out of their two working “geniuses,” irritability, low motivation and low productivity are sure to follow.

In the remaining 22% of the book, Lencioni provides a clear summary of the key insights from the “discussion,” succinctly identifying the important takeaways. The book offers great insights for enhancing team health and productivity.
