Day 5 – Eliza Davis George
This devotional is part of the Black Missionary Heroes Past and Present Series.
Eliza Davis George (1879–1980)
Missionary to Liberia
Read Isaiah 6:1–8
While in morning devotions, Eliza George, a teacher in Waco, Texas had a vision of Africans passing before the judgement seat of Christ weeping and saying, “No one ever told us you died for us.” Sharing her passion to go to Africa to spread the gospel with the college president, she was discouraged after he told her not to get carried away with foolishness. After two years of waiting, she resigned from her teaching position and sailed for Liberia. In her farewell speech she read the following poem: “My African brother is calling me; Hark! Hark! I hear his voice … Would you say ‘stay’ when God said ‘go’?”
