Summary

This book distills the author’s 45 years of training students, pastors, and missionaries in order to help them understand basic anthropological tools and perspectives that can enable them to overcome cross-cultural barriers through the gospel. The book presents the role and function of culture in mission, the value of incarnational identification in ministry and communication, the common cross-cultural problems of communication, the ways of overcoming culture shock, and how to grow into effective communicators. The author summarizes the intent of his missiological and anthropological book this way, “I have written this book to challenge you, the reader, to confront your ethnocentrism, to discover how much of your understanding of biblical truth has been shaped by your culture, and to adjust your lifestyle to one that is more appropriate for cross-cultural ministry where you live” (page xvi).
