Summary
This book, by Pulitzer winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin, is a brilliant study in leadership. The book is divided into three parts: first, the book provides a brief summary of the early lives of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Baines Johnson. Second, it discusses a pivotal personal crisis that each of these four individuals experienced in their early mid-life that subsequently shaped their respective perspectives and character. Lastly the book analyzes their approach to and resolution of four pivotal crises/problems that occurred at the height of their political careers. In the third portion of the book, Kearns summarizes her content under specific leadership principles applied by each respective leader. Though an unusual approach for a political biography, this strategy focuses her readers’ attention on key leadership insights applicable to leadership in any sphere of life.
