2016 Mission Leaders Conference
Short-Term Mission

This workshop focuses on incorporating intercultural competencies into STM programs. A valid and reliable assessment tool measuring eight intercultural competencies was used to measure changes in undergraduates. Consistent holistic competency gains of STM occur when there is quality preparation, reflection, debrief, individual trip team development and a service learning component. These holistic changes continue to exist 5-15 years after the STM experience compared to a control group with no STM experience. Program directors and researchers will describe effective implementation of the Standards of Excellence into two university STM programs. Strategies will be shared for implementing these standards and competencies into attendees’ STM programs.
