C-Suite Webinar • What Happens When a Cross Cultural Worker is Kidnapped?
Presented by Mr. Robert Klamser, Co-founder and Executive Director Crisis Consulting International. The US government has become unpredictable in its approach to assisting private US citizens held hostage outside the country. In one recent case, the government visited the home of a kidnapped cross cultural worker and demanded that the spouse approve of the governments plan to conduct a Special Forces rescue. In another recent case, a cross cultural worker was killed in Yemen during a US rescue attempt that had been kept so secret that the US apparently did not know that a release had been negotiated and was imminent. Over the past several months, the State Department and the FBI have argued publicly over whether or not family members or employers of kidnapped Americans will be prosecuted for attempting to pay a ransom. Finally, there is public discord between the US and many European nations regarding approaches to dealing with kidnapping of expatriates. Because so many kidnappings involve multiple hostages and because cross cultural workers of many nationalities often work together and can be kidnapped together, the US approach has potential impact throughout the missions world. Even though the policy changes underway are US policies, their impact extends much deeper into the international missions community.
