Summary
Tides of Opportunity is a collection of essays touching on aspects of missions to people living outside their home country or culture, that is diaspora or immigrant groups. Part 1 of the book focuses on understanding the magnitude and impact of migration and diaspora communities today through the lens of theology. Part 2 of Tides of Opportunity provides practical thoughts regarding ministering to diaspora and immigrant groups through examples, including ministering to refugees, immigrants in rural communities, Jewish-Gentile intermarriage, and those who have been victims of sex trafficking or exploitation, among others.
Tides of Opportunity emphasizes God’s call to reach out to the immigrant and diaspora peoples around us. God orchestrates the movement of people groups and many unreached peoples are living in our communities. Astoundingly, it is estimated that there are approximately 281 million immigrants worldwide or 1 in every 30 people. Are we willing to reach out to the people God has placed near us with the love of God? This takes an understanding of the make-up of our own community, a kingdom mindset, and a countercultural development of the spiritual discipline of hospitality. We must take a hard look at ourselves to see if we have placed the world’s values and attitudes towards immigrants above the missional purposes of God.
