Director of Development

Extreme Response International is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, Christian humanitarian organization that disrupts the cycle of generational poverty by operating programs centered on Education Reinforcement, Life Skills and Livelihood Training, and Leadership Development. Each year, Extreme Response International serves more than 8,000 children, women, and community leaders in Ecuador, South Africa, and the Philippines.

The Director of Development will report to the President and CEO and maintain responsibility for all fundraising activities for Extreme Response International, a global humanitarian nonprofit organization. This is a special opportunity to serve as the organization’s first-ever Director of Development while implementing the new strategic fundraising plan. The Director of Development will formalize and oversee a development program that is focused on building the major gifts pipeline and growing annual fundraising. This role has opportunities for remote work and occasional international travel.  


Lead the development program and serve as a frontline fundraiser:  

  • Drive all fundraising activity within a strategic annual development plan that is directed at supporting both the annual fund and other strategic objectives.
  • Identify and engage a growing base of modest and major donors to the organization.
  • Develop and implement campaigns to meet the organization’s current and future needs, promoting the organization’s shift toward a proactive and goal-oriented strategy.
  • Manage a portfolio of prospective donors for cultivation, briefing, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Develop, implement, and manage initiatives that cultivate relationships for the organization that foster financial giving and fundraising volunteerism.
  • Maintain and expand the organization’s relationships with individuals and family foundations in support of fundraising goals.
  • Formulate all research relative to the evaluation and cultivation of past, current, and prospective donors, including utilizing data to identify potential donors and determine appropriate asks.
  • Develop and write grant proposals to institutional funders as opportunities emerge.

Formalize development operations:

  • Lead the continued maturation of the organization’s development program by creating and implementing systems and processes to optimize fundraising operations.
  • Monitor and evaluate operational effectiveness while implementing changes required for improvement and adjusting fundraising goals as needed.
  • Ensure that data related to prospects and donors is recorded and tracked in the database. Prepare reports, update donor records, and assist with database maintenance as needed.

Activate leadership in development efforts:

  • Support the President and CEO and key leaders in fundraising by conducting and providing prospect research; developing briefing memos and remarks; crafting gift request materials; and managing full meeting preparations and follow-up.  
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to elevate their role in development and foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization.

Support the communications function:

  • Work closely with the Director of Communications to develop, implement, and manage strategic communications efforts that effectively promote the organization, including letters, email, social media, and printed publications.
  • Source and develop learning content to position the organization as a philanthropic guide for its robust network of diverse supporters.     


  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in relevant aspects of fundraising, ideally in a humanitarian nonprofit setting.
  • Experience leading, implementing, and integrating a full range of development programs, including annual fundraising campaigns and project-based initiatives.
  • A strong grasp of, and commitment to, best practices in all areas of development.
  • A proven track record of relationship-based fundraising with an intentional focus on cultivation, stewardship, and building personal relationships with philanthropists to secure major gifts.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies including staff, board members, donors, and volunteers with varying levels of philanthropic sophistication.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of discretion with respect to confidential information.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Superior knowledge and command of Microsoft Office products and extensive experience working with donor CRM software (NetSuite experience preferred).
  • A strong customer service ethic and high expectations for quality.
  • Demonstrated success in managing and training individuals or teams.
  • The ability to work on evenings and weekends on occasion as demands necessitate.

  • Have experience working with international or humanitarian organizations with missionary staff (preferred but not required).
