Summary
Mary Murphy is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (BA) and Stanford University (PhD) and is Endowed Professor of Psychological Sciences at Indiana University. Author of more than 100 publications, she is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and founder/CEO of the Equity Accelerator, a research and consulting organization that works with schools and companies to create more productive learning and working environments.
In 2006, Carol Dweck, professor at Stanford University and mentor to Mary Murphy, published her multi-million-copy bestseller Mindset that, through rigorous research, overturned common views of individual potential. The book coined the terms “fixed” and “growth” mindsets: in a “fixed” mindset, talent and intelligence are viewed as predetermined traits – a belief that can in fact restrict one’s development; in a “growth” mindset, talent and intelligence are viewed as qualities that can be effectively developed.
In Cultures of Growth, Murphy further demonstrates that organizations that foster a growth mindset can enable their teams or classrooms to achieve fresh breakthroughs – helping each person achieve their potential.
The book contains the insights from Murphy’s decade-long research that organizations cultivating a growth mindset inspire deeper learning, spark collaboration, spur innovation, and build the trust necessary for risk-taking. Participants are also less likely to cheat, cut corners, or steal another’s ideas and are more likely to achieve top results.
